In addition to voice control, we also easily controlled ADT through our smartphones. In fact, the ADT Control app acts as our mobile control panel, giving us complete access to the system at home and outside. The system protected against theft, gave environmental alerts, and automated our home, all from a smartphone app.

For us, the best thing about installing ADT or ADT Control was that it was basically free. We learned from the salesperson that we would only have to pay between $99 and $199 depending on our home configuration, and ADT offered us a $100 VISA Reward Card as a rebate. We’ve also seen ADT offer same-day installation if you order by 2pm, which is great if you’re in a rush to get started.

Hardwired, wireless, and hybrid security
Many new security systems focus on wireless systems that use cellular signals or Wi-Fi to communicate, which in most cases is better than landline systems. However, in some situations, a wired, landline system is better than wireless one. Vivint provided us with a professional installation at no cost. Apart from basic security we also got environmental protection. What really made this company stand out for us, though, was its home automation with voice commands.
Vivint worked with some of the biggest smart home assistants like Google Home and Alexa to develop a fully autonomous home. In our research, we found that most Vivint customers were homeowners with long-term security contracts and the majority gave Vivint excellent reviews.

In addition to the systems above, we’ve tested many of the top competitors, including Abode, Abode Iota, Frontpoint, Kangaroo, Ring Alarm, Cove and ADT. Abode and Abode’s all-in-one security camera Iota were both solid contenders that didn’t quite match SimpliSafe’s price, but they’re worth checking out if you’re interested in DIY smart home systems for small spaces or systems that do not Monitoring subscription is required. Ring Alarm is another solid DIY option, but the company’s recent issues with police partnerships keep us from recommending it — especially when a company like Wyze offers such a robust, budget-friendly alternative.
DIY systems Frontpoint, Cove and Kangaroo all had features to recommend them. FrontPoint’s system is reliable and its hardware is reasonably priced, but its $45 monthly monitoring fee is prohibitive. The Kangaroo, by contrast, is incredibly wallet-friendly but its doorbell camera is terrible, so the Wise maintains its lead in the budget category as well. Cove Home Security, despite reasonable hardware prices, fell to an overly restrictive subscription model that doesn’t allow for self-monitoring or app access without a significant monthly fee.
ADT, one of the biggest brands we’ve tested, was a massive disappointment. It is very expensive, requires a contract and the app is complicated. We also tested AT&T Digital Life, though we removed that system from consideration because the company stopped installing it for new customers.
We have yet to test Brinks Home and ADT Blue, though we hope to add them to our consideration in the coming months.
